Who We Are

“Passport Foundation doesn’t just fund projects—they fuel movements. They see the big picture, connect the right people, and make things happen.”

— Laurie Valeriano, Toxic Free Future

We Focus Deeply to Create Impact

We don’t spread ourselves thin. We believe that solving complex challenges requires sustained, strategic investment in a single issue. For the past 15 years, that issue has been toxic pollution. By going deep, we’ve been able to build the infrastructure, relationships, and momentum needed to drive lasting change.

“The impact of Passport’s funding goes beyond their grantees. They strengthen the entire field—aligning efforts, driving efficiency, and ensuring organizations have what they need to win.” — Gina Ciganik

The Passport Approach: Aligning Strategy, Science & Scale

We are connectors, conveners, and catalysts. We don’t just write checks—we build the infrastructure needed to turn research into impact, align funders, and drive regulatory and market change. Our focus is on scalable interventions that create lasting change.

Hope

Hope Adhanom-Shipman, Strategy and Analytics Associate

Hope Adhanom-Shipman is a systems thinker, data analyst, and community builder dedicated to advancing solutions that support human and environmental well-being. As Strategy and Analytics Associate at Passport Foundation, she works to better understand and communicate the value of the transformative work done by the foundation’s grantees and identify opportunities for strategic philanthropic investment to maximize its impact.

Hope’s interest in environmental health took root growing up in Tazewell County, Illinois, a community shaped by industrial manufacturing and intensive agriculture and chronicled by Sandra Steingraber in Living Downstream. Reading Steingraber’s account of the connections between chemical pollution and cancer gave context to the environmental health issues Hope grew up around and sparked a lasting interest in the relationship between the environment and human health.

She carried that interest to Stanford, where she studied Earth Systems, an interdisciplinary program focused on tackling complex environmental challenges from multiple perspectives. Her studies centered on sustainable food systems, complemented by a minor in Data Science. Since graduation, she has continued working at the intersection of environment, health, and data, first as an Environmental Health Fellow at the Environmental Working Group and now at Passport Foundation.

Outside of work, Hope finds meaning through community gardens, where the act of growing something alongside others embodies the same interconnectedness and collaborative spirit she strives to bring to her work.
